My dad and his wife travel annually down south to the warmth of Mexico and I have been lucky enough to tag along on a couple of their getaways. Each and every time I arrive, I am reminded why I keep going back. Not only is Mexico an affordable place, it is also enjoyable in every other aspect. However, here’s the thing, my family and I never do the all-inclusive bit. If you want the real Mexican deal, then you need to venture into the small towns and passer-by villages. Our home away from home is in the little town Melaque which is neighbor to Barra de Navidad based in Manzanillo. Melaque has everything you need and more. What is great is that the town hasn’t been taken over and consumed by tourism. Nonetheless, need not worry, you won’t be the only gringo in the crowd!
So, back to Cinco De Mayo. When people hear Cinco De Mayo they usually relate it to Mexico and Tequila and use it as an excuse to go out and have a few drinks. I for one, know that up until now I didn’t know the true meaning of this day. So, I’ve gone and done a little research and have a couple fun facts about what this day truly means! Read this, learn something new and then go have a few!
- Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.
- The day is celebrated across Mexico and the US with parades, music performers and street festivals.
- The biggest Cinco de Mayo event ( Festival de Fiesta Broadway) in the world is held in L.A. Over 600,000 people turn up for it!
